Many beautiful missions were built in New Mexico by the Spaniards in the 1700s during their colonization of the New World. El Santuario de Chimayó has been preserved and is one of those missions that is still in use. It is known as “the Lourdes of America” because of the unexplained healings that have taken place there. The church and surrounding land have a sense of existing in another world and in another time.
